KISS ME I’M A SENIOR

These past couple of years have flown by so quickly that it’s almost scary that I’m calling myself a senior again. I can finally wear those fancy buttons that tell the world to kiss me because I AM a senior. How great is that? I’m thinking about the buttons and not the actual diploma.

Today, I went through a long list of PA schools, and it was fairly easy for me to eliminate schools. First thing I did was scratch out schools with deadlines that had already passed. EASY. Second, scratch out schools that weren’t Master Degree programs. EASY. Third, scratch out schools that needed a particular class that I hadn’t already taken. EASY. The tough part was finding a state that I’ll actually want to live in for 2 years. THERE ARE SO MANY. (Agh I have a headache, I think I need to wear my reading glasses right now…too bad I don’t have them on me)

It’s kind of sad, but I’ve been judging schools based on their website. If I see a website with basic HTML, 9 times out of 10 I’ll end up closing the tab. (OK I do check out a few things on the school beforehand, but lets just say visiting the website is becoming my information session for that school.) I even went as far as learning more about the web developer for one site. Would you consider that procrastinating? I’m not sure. hehe Anyways here’s a listing of schools I’ll definitely be applying to:

-Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (Boston): incredibly expensive at $88,350, 30 months
-” ” (Manchester & Worchester): 24 months, $66,000
-Pace University (Lenox Hill NYC): $65,056, 36 months, I’m strangely attracted to this school for all of its programs and location
-Stony Brook University (NYC): 27 months, $33,200
-Drexel University (Philly): 27 months, $56,000, I would definitely go here if accepted. One negative would be no stimulators, but I could deal.
-Chatham University (Pittsburg): 24 months, $62,240
-Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania: 24 months, $28,278, would have to retake GREs
-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (Philly): 26 months, $50,534 (obviously, you can tell I might be in Philly)
-James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA): 28 months, hear lots of good things about their program
-University of Washington: 24 months, $38,632, re-evaulating my decision to apply here
-2 schools in Oregon
-Samuel Merritt College (Oakland, CA
-UC Davis (Sacremento, CA)
-Rosalind Frankling Medical School (Illinois) – Absolutely loved the layout of this school and the double-helix sidewalks. Also their cadaver lab was quite extensive, as well as the various computer programs used for their Histology classes. ALSO, they have electrical stimulators. (technology at its best)
-Touro University (Vallejo, CA): dual MS Public Health program

I’m quite dissapointed with the schools on the west coast since they require so much more heath care experience than the ones on the east coast. I’m not sure why there’s a disparity, but it’s also seen in the average age of the students.

Anyways, more on schools later, I have an urge to write about something else…so expect another entry in a little while about the books that I’ve been reading.

Midnight Musings

What is the nervous system?  Simple, it’s a group of multi-directional networks.

What is the brain?  A complex interaction of genetic influences from your biology and environment.

What is the consciousness?  What is the mind?  What is the “self”?

Each of us has a “brain,” and we each have a “mind.”  Do all brains give rise to minds?  is the mind the self?  Does anything with a brain have a self?  How much brain is necessary to have a mind and a self?  If we change the brain, do we change the self?

There are many ways to define the “self.”  I think therefore I believe my “self” exists.  But what about the other selves?  Would we necessarily count them into this category?   Examples include: fetuses, the profoundly retarded, profoundly brain injured, senile, aged.  The “what-ifs” of each of these exists in science and society.

Anything that has a brain can have a mind can have a consciousness and so can have a brain. Must we be careful and add exceptions if all of those traits that I just named do exist in most entities?  BUT WE MUST BE CAREFUL.  Take for example, mice, they have a brain. They must be scurrying somewhere.  Lets compare these mice to non-viable humans, as they were called during the Holocaust.  Don’t they have equivalent to more of a brain than mice?  Didn’t we just say that everything that has a brain has a mind?   Can we really compare a human to a mouse?

How far should we study the mind?  And of what use would it be to the world?  The BIG four that are usually named include: Technology, Use of pharmacology, Transplanation, and Genomics.  SUCH GENERAL TERMS.  If we go further with any of these areas, when will we know the appropriate time to stop?  Some people with heart transplants say they feel different.  In those who have non-anonymous donors, they learn from their donors families how they seem similar to the person deceased.  This interests me so LETS THINK ABOUT IT.  Heart cells get excited and they are responsive and communicative tissues …perhaps our heart sort of has a “mind” …perhaps SOMEHOW that mind, some part of it was transferred to the recipient of the organ?  Do you think it’s possible?

Whenever I think of the mind, I start thinking about how I’m thinking.  Once I start thinking, I think about the fact that I can actually hear myself.  I’ll close my eyes and I can almost form what I want to see.  Although still dark, I can imagine.  What part of the mind is the imagination?

There’s so much to the mind that seems a mystery.  Just how does it happen?  How can we formulate such thoughts?  Gattaca and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are perfect movies that question the “self”? I’d like to know, the how… because obviously my mind doesn’t know its origin.

The Test

Have I mentioned how much I dislike standarized tests?  My writing and math went well…but verbal, that score was frightful.  =\  I’ll have to retake the test again…

Mark. Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg.  Mark.  Zuckerberg.  He was ONLY a Harvard undergraduate when he decided to create facebook. (which was formerly known as FaceMash)  UNBELIEVEABLE.  Initally, he was brought down by Harvard for exposing identity information, but obviously that didn’t keep him down.   Heck, he was asked to work for Google and Microsoft even before admittance to any college.  Imagine all the things that I could do… all I need is just that one big idea.

PostSecret

Postsecret is a site that I habitually go to every Sunday.  Its a community that “lets out” their secrets, thoughts, and feelings through simple post cards that they’ve embellished with pictures and words.   After reading these secrets, you realize just how ‘human’ everyone is with their faults and cares.  I go to the site to read each secret, but particularly to see how each person designed their secret.  Some are covered in newspaper clippings, and others are simply written with a Sharpie.  Some of the secrets still feel like ‘secrets’ as they are camouflaged with a myriad of colors and pictures.

“The designer is still holding in their secret,” I think to myself as I look at these special secrets.

I think the ones that intrigue me the most are the ones that I don’t quite understand.  I analyze it from top to bottom, bottom to top, but still I’m unsure of its meaning.  How?  AND Why?

One amazing story that I read on Postsecret brought upon those sentimental, almost maudlin thoughts.  Those feelings that have you so captivated that you FEEL as if YOU’RE THERE applauding and “high-fiving” them afterward.

For people who don’t know, most of the secrets are displayed along the side of a circular staircase that gradually rises to the third floor of the museum. As the couple slowly ascended the stairs she read every PostSecret postcard. He knew she would because it had been her idea to attend the exhibit.

What she did not know was that earlier he had made a special arrangement with me to replace the last post card with a special one he had created just for her see.

When they reached the top of the stairs she read the final card, “I don’t know if I believe in God, but I believe something Great brought you into my life. If you turn around I’ll ask you to marry me. . . ”

Rebecca went on to say that when the young woman turned around her future husband was on bended knee with an illuminated ring box holding a 6-carat (!) diamond. She said “yes” with tears and to spontaneous applause from the other visitors who were hoping to witness a happy ending.

Keep posting because I’m still reading listening.

Jolly Ranchers!

Since I’ve been intermittently studying over the past couple of days, I’m realized how important its been to wear my reading glasses.  The amount of close-vision required when you work at a computer can be strenuous on your eyes, since there’s a cornucopia of convergency.  For those of you who don’t know what that is, I bet you’d understand WITH A PICTURE!

Cross-eyed!

Cross-eyed!

Hehe That’s not even completely crossed though since I was simultaneously clicking my mouse.  My eye doctor prescribed me with a +1.00 reading glasses primarily for studying, so once I’m out of college, I can stop using them.  I have what doctors would call ‘eso’ or having a tendency to over-converge.  Obviously, looking at a computer screen is detrimental, not significantly, but over a long period of time it can cause headaches, etc.  Anyways, for all those who are constantly at a computer, I’d recommend asking your eye doctor if it’s something that could benefit you.

My new reading glasses!

So I’ve decided that my roommate Ben is a stentorian.  I can hear his screams and yelps all the way from my room.  (He’s playing beer pong right now)  Also, since I’m SO observant, those three boys have used the toilet quite a few times.  The stentorian just delivered me a jolly rancher tasting drink.  Word to bartenders:  Lemon-flavored Bacardi and Apple Juicy Juice tastes like Watermelon Jolly Rancher.  I would even argue that it has the same texture…somehow…just trust me on this one.

Jolly Rancher

Jolly Rancher

One song that I keep close to me is “Blinded” by Third Eye Blind and it’s playing in the other room as I write this entry.  The words are carefully chosen that it evokes all the right feelings.  Perhaps it’s because I feel that this song was dedicated to me…and that I know that it makes him think of me and me of him.

As I study more, I’m realizing how far I’ve come.  At the beginning of the summer, there was a multitude of words that I felt were basically random letters put side by side.  I stared at the word and it did nothing for me.  Now I feel I’ve expanded by vocabulary 10-fold.  OKAY maybe not that much because it sounds like I didn’t know any words before.  Obviously, I spoke “BABY” before.  I feel like one of Kaplan success stories, but this is more of a personal win for me.  I’ve decided that I’m going to keep Merriam-Webster One-A-Day under my RSS feed.

(WOW, they’re already using the bathroom again…AMAZING)

Alright, time to study more :)

EDIT:

After a great excursion away from studying, I’m compelled to brainstorm ideas for Monday afternoon.  (aka after the big kahuna)

  • Go to MAC and buy under-eye makeup
  • Take a long, unexpected nap
  • Watch Barcelona by Woody Allen
  • Organize music
  • Finish making my room awesome looking
  • SEE FRIENDS!

That last line

At the soft-murmured words that were fulfilled In the seraphic glancing of thine eyes — Of all who owe thee most — whose gratitude Nearest resembles worship — oh, remember The truest — the most fervently devoted, And think that these weak lines are written by him — By him who, as he pens them, thrills to think His spirit is communing with an angel’s
